The Indian OTT market is one of the largest in the world, and it's hungry for original content. For screenwriters, this creates an unprecedented opportunity — but navigating the submission process for each platform requires understanding their specific requirements, channels, and unwritten rules.

Here's a practical, no-nonsense guide to getting your screenplay in front of the right people at India's major streaming platforms — and protecting it every step of the way.

The Reality Check

Before diving into the specifics, let's be direct about something: no major OTT platform accepts unsolicited scripts through a general inbox.

Netflix's official policy is clear — they require submissions through licensed agents, producers, attorneys, managers, or industry executives who already have a relationship with Netflix. Amazon Studios no longer has an open submission window. Disney+ Hotstar, JioCinema, and other Indian platforms operate similarly.

This doesn't mean the door is closed. It means you need to find the right door. Here's how.

Path 1: Through an Agent or Manager

This is the most established route and the one platforms publicly recommend.

How it works: A literary agent or entertainment manager who has relationships with OTT platform executives reads your script, agrees to represent it, and pitches it on your behalf. The agent handles the business side — negotiations, contracts, fees — while you focus on the creative.

How to get one: Agents discover writers through screenwriting competitions (Filmfare Awards for short films, Mumbai Film Festival screenplay contests, international competitions like Austin Film Festival or PAGE Awards), referrals from other writers, and increasingly through strong online presence and writing samples.

Protection note: Before sharing your screenplay with any agent, timestamp it. Agents are generally trustworthy, but your protection should never depend on anyone's character.

Path 2: Through a Production Company

Many writers reach OTT platforms not directly, but through production companies that have development deals with the platforms.

How it works: Production companies with platform deals are constantly looking for content. You pitch your screenplay to the production company, and if they're interested, they take it to the platform as part of their development pipeline.

Key production companies with OTT relationships in India include: Excel Entertainment, Dharmatic Entertainment, Clean Slate Filmz, Abundantia Entertainment, Banijay Asia, Applause Entertainment, Emmay Entertainment, and many others. Research which companies produce the kind of content that matches your screenplay.

How to approach them: Cold emails work occasionally but rarely. Better routes include industry events, writer's workshops, film festivals, and warm introductions from people in your network. Some companies have submission pages on their websites — use them, but don't rely on them exclusively.

Protection note: Timestamp before every submission to every company. If you're pitching to five production companies simultaneously, you want proof of what your script contained when each company received it.

Path 3: Through Film Festivals and Labs

Film festivals and screenwriting labs have become significant pipelines to OTT platforms. Platforms actively scout at these events, and being selected for a prestigious lab can put your work directly in front of commissioning editors.

Key events for Indian screenwriters:

  • NFDC Film Bazaar (Goa) — India's primary film market, where platforms actively acquire
  • Mumbai Film Festival (MAMI) — includes screenplay development programmes
  • Dharamshala International Film Festival — growing focus on emerging talent
  • Screenwriters Association (SWA) workshops and events
  • International labs like Sundance Screenwriters Lab and Berlinale Script Station also attract platform attention

Protection note: If you're submitting to a lab or festival, timestamp the submitted version. Labs often involve development feedback that changes your script — timestamp before and after the lab to show what was yours versus what evolved through collaboration.

Path 4: Build a Track Record Independently

Perhaps the most viable path for writers without industry connections: create something on your own and use it as proof of concept.

Short films: Write and produce a short film based on your concept. Upload it to YouTube or submit it to short film festivals. A well-received short film based on your script concept demonstrates both your writing ability and the concept's potential. Platforms regularly discover writers through their short films.

Web series (independent): Self-produced web series on YouTube have launched multiple careers in Indian entertainment. If your screenplay concept works as a short series, producing even a few episodes independently can attract platform attention.

Contests and fellowships: Winning or placing in recognised screenwriting competitions gives you a credential that opens doors. Many competitions are specifically scouted by agents and production companies.

Published writing: If your screenplay adapts well to a short story or novel format, publishing in literary magazines or online platforms can create a secondary path to visibility.

Platform-Specific Notes

Netflix India

Netflix India has significantly expanded its original content slate. They look for stories with strong local flavour and global appeal — narratives rooted in Indian culture but with themes that resonate internationally.

Netflix typically acquires content in three ways: commissioning originals through their development team, co-producing with Indian production companies, and buying completed or nearly completed projects. For screenwriters, the most realistic path is through a production company with a Netflix deal or through an agent who has Netflix relationships.

Amazon Prime Video India

Amazon has been aggressive in the Indian content space, producing across Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and other languages. Like Netflix, they work primarily through established channels — production companies, agents, and managers.

Amazon has historically been slightly more accessible to independent pitches than Netflix, though their open submission policy is no longer active.

JioCinema

Backed by Reliance Industries, JioCinema has become a major player with both licensed and original content. Their commissioning process is newer, which means relationships are less entrenched — creating potential opportunities for writers who can connect with their creative team.

Disney+ Hotstar

With both Star Studios and Disney's content pipeline, Disney+ Hotstar produces significant original Indian content. Their content team works across Hindi and regional languages.

Zee5, Sony LIV, and Others

Smaller platforms often have less rigid submission processes and may be more accessible to independent writers. They also tend to produce more genre-specific content (thriller, horror, romance), which can work in your favour if your screenplay fits their slate.

The Submission Package

Regardless of which platform or path you're targeting, you need a professional submission package:

Logline. One to two sentences that capture the essence of your story. This is the single most important marketing tool for your screenplay.

Synopsis. One to two pages covering the complete story arc, including the ending. Production executives need to know where the story goes.

Treatment. Five to fifteen pages providing a detailed narrative of the story, with key scenes, character development, and tonal descriptions. Some platforms request this before asking for the full script.

Full Screenplay. The complete script, properly formatted. Use industry-standard screenplay software (Final Draft, Scrite, WriterSolo, Fade In) for consistent formatting.

Pitch Deck (Optional but Recommended). A visual document (10-15 pages) that conveys the tone, world, and feel of your project through images, mood boards, and concise text. This is increasingly expected for series pitches.

Proof of Concept (Optional). A short film, sizzle reel, or teaser that demonstrates the visual potential of your concept.

The Protection Protocol for Submissions

Here's the step-by-step protocol for protecting your screenplay during the submission process:

Step 1: Timestamp everything. Before you begin submitting, timestamp your complete submission package — logline, synopsis, treatment, and full screenplay. This creates a baseline.

Step 2: Track your submissions. Maintain a simple log: who you submitted to, what you submitted, when, and through what channel.

Step 3: Timestamp before each share. If you revise your script between submissions, timestamp the new version before sending it.

Step 4: Submit through documented channels. Prefer email over verbal pitches. If you do pitch verbally, follow up with an email summarising what you discussed.

Step 5: Keep originals untouched. Never modify a timestamped version. If you need to make changes, save as a new file and timestamp the new version.

Step 6: Register once final. When your screenplay reaches final form and you're in active discussions with a platform or producer, register with SWA and/or the Copyright Office.

The Bottom Line

Getting your screenplay to an OTT platform is a marathon, not a sprint. The industry is relationship-driven, and breaking in takes persistence, talent, and strategy.

But every step of that journey — every pitch, every submission, every shared draft — is a moment when your work is vulnerable. Protecting it isn't paranoia; it's professionalism. The writers who succeed in this industry aren't just talented — they're smart about how they share, document, and defend their creative work.
